Editor's Review

DREDGE is the most haunting, addictive fishing game you’ll ever play—don’t let the “fishing” label fool you. I’ve spent nights trawling the seas around The Marrows, selling catches to locals, upgrading my boat, and uncovering the islands’ twisted secrets. It’s not just cast-and-reel; you’re dredging for treasures, dodging sharp rocks, and fighting terrifying stuff that lurks in the night fog. The mystery hooks you fast, and upgrading your gear to reach new islands never gets old. Perfect for folks who love story-driven games, slow-burn horror, and exploration—just don’t play it alone after dark. It’s creepy, it’s satisfying, and it’s one of those games that sticks with you long after you put it down.

DREDGE Tips

DREDGE – Honest Review & Newbie Survival Guide

Let me cut straight to the chase: DREDGE isn’t just a fishing game—it’s a haunting, Lovecraftian nightmare wrapped in a relaxing (until it’s not) fishing loop, and I’m obsessed. I’ve spent nights crashing my boat, selling mackerel to pay off debts, and dodging the terrifying garbage that lurks in the night fog—and I can’t stop playing.

Don’t let the “fishing” label fool you. This game’s core is equal parts exploration, mystery, and survival. You start in The Marrows, broke with a beat-up boat and a $50 debt to the mayor. Your first goal? Catch fish, sell ’em, and upgrade your gear—but here’s the catch: get back to shore before sundown. That fog? It’s not just spooky; it messes with your sanity, spawns creepy creatures, and will sink your boat faster than you can reel in a cod.

The art’s gorgeous but eerie, with 125+ fish (some normal, some mutated and messed up by the fog) and remote islands full of secrets. But it’s tough, especially for newbies—so I’m breaking down the tips that saved me from restarting 10 times in a row.

Newbie Tips You Actually Need (Trust Me):

Stop lingering after dawn. I made this mistake first—stayed out to catch one more fish, got caught in the fog, and lost my whole catch. Haul ass back to town when the sky starts dimming; the night is not your friend.

Prioritize boat upgrades first. Spend your cash on better lights (slows sanity loss) and a faster engine (outrun fog monsters) before fancy rods. Basic rods work fine early on—survival matters more.

Fill your hold smart, not full. Fish go bad, and your boat’s space is limited (think Tetris). Focus on easy catches like blue mackerel first; skip dredging for treasures until you can afford a bigger hold.

Do the side quests. The lighthouse keeper’s quests give extra cash and lore, and the “Grotesque Fish” quest kicks off the game’s weirder, better mysteries. Don’t skip ’em—they unlock new areas and abilities.

Now, the bad stuff: it’s slow at first. Grinding fish to pay off that debt can feel tedious, and the sanity system takes getting used to. But once you unlock better gear and dive into the mystery? It’s worth it.

Who’s this for? Folks who love story-driven games, slow-burn horror, and exploration—if you hate jump scares but love a good creepy vibe, this is for you. Newbies can jump in, but take it slow. It’s an 8.5/10—haunting, addictive, and one of the most unique games I’ve played this year.
