I’ve sunk a solid chunk of hours into it, and here’s the tea: it’s straightforward, satisfying, and exactly what you want when you’re in the mood to build a base, recruit heroes, and beat the ever-living crap out of demons. If you’re new to this game and don’t wanna waste time fumbling through the early stages, listen up—this is the no-BS guide you need, no fluff, just what works.
First rule: Stop rushing to fight. I get it, demons are annoying and you want to punch them in the face ASAP. But your city’s in shambles—demons destroyed everything, and you’ve got nothing to work with. Your first move? Rebuild. Not the most exciting part, but it’s non-negotiable. Fix your main buildings first, because that’s how you get resources, unlock helpers, and start building an army. Skip this, and you’ll get steamrolled by the first flaming demon that shows up. Trust me, I learned that the hard way.
Heroes aren’t optional—they’re your backbone. You can’t just collect them and call it a day; you need to level them up, too. These dark heroes lead your troops, and if they’re weak, your whole army’s gonna crumble. Don’t sleep on upgrading their gear or abilities, either. The higher their power, the better they’ll hold up against those brutal devouring and crushing demons. I ignored upgrades early on, and my hero got taken out in two hits by a mid-tier demon. Not fun.
Another big one: You can’t win alone. This game’s not about being a lone wolf—you need allies. Team up with other factions, summon backup, and stop trying to take on demon lords by yourself. As for the story? It’s fine. Nothing crazy—Ellie saves Lola from demons, they meet a vampire lord, their new home gets destroyed, and now they’re out for revenge. It’s enough to give you a reason to keep playing, but let’s be real—you’re here for the building and fighting, not the plot. It’s serviceable, not spectacular.
All in all, Return of Shadow is a solid pick for strategy fans. It’s easy to learn but has enough depth to keep you coming back. For new players, stick to the basics: rebuild first, upgrade your heroes, and ally up. Do that, and you’ll be rewriting the dark world’s rules before you know it. It’s not perfect, but it’s a great way to kill time when you’re bored—and that’s all you can ask for from a mobile strategy game.
