Editor's Review

Townscaper isn’t your typical game—its more a relaxing building toy that lets me craft charming island towns. I pick colors from the palette, drop blocks on the grid, and watch the game turn ’em into cozy houses, bridges and stairways all on its own. No goals, no stress, just pure creativity. It’s perfect for folks who love casual building, or anyone needing a calm, creative escape.

Townscaper Official Introduction

Build quaint island towns with curvy streets. Build small hamlets, soaring cathedrals, canal networks, or sky cities on stilts. Block by block.

No goal. No real gameplay. Just plenty of building and plenty of beauty. That's it.

Townscaper is an experimental passion project. More of a toy than a game. Pick colors from the palette, plop down colored blocks of house on the irregular grid, and watch Townscaper's underlying algorithm automatically turn those blocks into cute little houses, arches, stairways, bridges and lush backyards, depending on their configuration.

Townscaper Android Guide: Master the Chill Building Game in 10 Minutes

Townscaper (also called Town Stacker or Water Town) isn’t your typical city-builder. No stats, no resources to grind, no stress—just pure, unadulterated fun building cute water towns on your Android phone. Developed by Oskar Stålberg and dropped on mobile back in 2021, it’s the kind of game you pick up when you need to unwind, and it’s way easier to get into than you might think.

First off, let’s talk controls—they’re so simple a kid could nail ’em. You tap the water to make land, tap the land to build houses, and swipe to switch colors. That’s it. No complicated menus, no tutorials you have to sit through (though you might want to mess around for 2 minutes to get the hang of it). When you first fire it up, you’ll only have two colors unlocked, but trust me, that’s more than enough to start cranking out cool-looking buildings.

Now, if you’re here for the achievements (and let’s be real, who isn’t?), most are a total breeze—you can knock out 9 of the 10 in under 30 minutes. The only pain in the butt is the Floating City achievement, and I’m gonna save you the headache: don’t waste time refreshing the map looking for a circle area. Just search for “Townscaper Floating City code” online and copy-paste it. I spent 30 minutes grinding that thing before I figured that out, so take my advice.

Here’s the quick hit list for the easy achievements—no fluff, just what you need to do:

1. Pointed Roof House: Build a single 2-story house. Literally any one, doesn’t matter the color.

2. Hook: Either build three 3-story houses, strip the top two from the left and right, and keep the top of the middle one. Or use three colors for a row of 2-story houses, remove the top from the sides and the bottom from the middle.

3. Garden: Make a 3x3 foundation, build houses on the edges, leave the middle empty.

4. Garden with Sculpture: Go bigger—5x5 foundation, build 2-story houses around the perimeter, punch holes in the middle of each side. Boom, sculpture appears.

The rest? Using 100 or 1000 bricks will happen naturally (use a controller to hold A and grind 1000 if you’re in a hurry), building a lighthouse is just a house in water plus a color-swapped second floor, and “To the Sky” is just stacking houses until you can’t anymore.

Pro tip: Want to make your town look sick? Mix colors—don’t just stick to one. Add bridges, docks, or even floating islands (yes, those are a thing). For floating islands, just connect the tiny green house nodes into a closed shape—any shape works, even with gaps. And use the camera button to snap screenshots; your town’s gonna look too good not to share.

Is it perfect? Nah. Some players say it gets repetitive after a while, and they’re not wrong—there’s no end goal, just building for the sake of building. But that’s the point. It’s a chill escape, not a grind. If you want a game to play while you’re waiting for coffee or unwinding after work, Townscaper is a no-brainer.
