Plague Inc. Starter Guide: How to Actually Wipe Out Humanity

So you’ve downloaded Plague Inc., thinking it’s just some casual mobile game where you tap a few buttons and watch the world burn. Yeah, not quite. This thing gets brutal real fast. One minute you’re feeling like a genius because you infected India, and the next, Greenland’s sitting there with zero cases while the rest of the world is already developing a cure. Frustrating, right? The truth is, Plague Inc. is all about strategy, not clicking random upgrades. If you want to actually win, you need to think like a pathogen.

A lot of new players mess up right at the start—picking a country without thinking it through. Your starting location sets the tone for the whole run. What you want is a densely populated place with plenty of airports and ports, but mediocre healthcare. Think India, China, or Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia is actually a sneaky good pick: it’s got busy airports, sits right between Asia, Africa, and Europe, and connects to everything. What you don’t want is rich countries with advanced healthcare, isolated islands, or anywhere freezing cold. Starting in the U.S. or Canada sounds fun until you realize you’re burning all your DNA just to survive their medical systems.

Once you’re in, you’ll collect DNA from red bubbles that appear when you infect new countries. Here’s the trick: don’t just grab them randomly. The more severe your disease is, the more DNA you get from each bubble. But if you make it too severe too early, countries will spot you and start shutting borders before you’ve spread everywhere. Keep things mild at first. Focus on transmission upgrades—air, water, livestock. Get your disease moving before you start killing people. Once you’ve got a solid global footprint, then you can start cranking up the lethality.

If you’ve played even one round, you already know the biggest headache: Greenland. That one country stays clean while everyone else is dying because it’s cold, isolated, and only has a single port. The move is to infect Russia and Norway first—they’ve got shipping routes to Greenland. You’ll need cold resistance and water transmission to make it stick. And don’t wait too long. Once countries start closing their ports, you’re basically locked out.

Playing stealthy is smart early on. You don’t want the world to know what’s coming until it’s already everywhere. But at some point, you have to flip the switch. When cure research hits around 60–70 percent, that’s your signal to go all in. Start adding lethal symptoms—necrosis, total organ failure, the nasty stuff. The goal is to kill everyone before the scientists figure out what’s happening.

Different diseases also demand different approaches. Bacteria is straightforward but struggles with extreme climates, so grab cold and heat resistance early. Virus mutates like crazy—you’ll spend a lot of time devolving unwanted symptoms unless you’re careful. Fungus can’t rely on standard transmission upgrades; use those spore burst abilities to jump-start your spread. Nano-Virus starts with cure research immediately, so you’ll need to actively sabotage it from the beginning.

There are also combo effects worth remembering. Some symptom pairs give you extra benefits. For example, insomnia plus anemia triggers the “walking dead” effect, which slows cure research. Insanity plus diarrhea boosts infectivity, though it also draws more attention. These aren’t game-breaking, but they give you a nice edge once you’ve got the basics down.

At the end of the day, Plague Inc. isn’t about random chaos—it’s about timing. Spread first, kill later. Keep an eye on the news feed; it tells you where events are happening, and more people gathering means more infections. And for the love of everything unholy, figure out Greenland before it’s too late. Get those basics down, and you’ll be wiping out humanity in no time.
