Editor's Review
Flightradar24 isn't just a map with dots—it's the kind of app that turns a boring wait at the airport into a full-on investigation. I pulled it up during a layover, pointed my phone at a passing plane, and instantly knew it was a 737 headed to Dublin, complete with its speed, altitude, and a photo of the actual aircraft.

How it works
Most aircraft today are equipped with ADS-B transponders that transmit positional data. Flightradar24 has a rapidly growing network of over 50,000 ground stations around the world to receive this data that then shows up as aircraft moving on a map in the app. In an expanding number of regions, with the help of multilateration, we’re able to calculate the positions of aircraft that don’t have ADS-B transponders. Coverage in North America is also supplemented by real-time radar data. Coverage is variable and subject to change at any time.
Flightradar24 Tips
Flightradar24 Flight Tracker is easily the most polished, reliable flight tracking app available for Android, built for casual travelers, aviation fans, and anyone who needs accurate, real-time flight data at their fingertips. This IGN-style breakdown cuts through the generic app fluff to give you honest, no-nonsense insight into how it works, where it shines, its small flaws, and a quick beginner’s guide to start using it like a pro in minutes — no tech jargon, no confusing steps.
Core Android App Review
At its core, this is a real-time global flight tracking tool powered by a massive ADS-B receiver network, giving you live access to thousands of commercial and private flights across the world. The Android version runs incredibly smooth on nearly all devices, from budget phones to high-end flagships, with a clean, zoomable radar map that’s easy to navigate and doesn’t lag or crash during use. Tap any plane icon on the map, and you instantly get key details: flight number, departure and arrival airports, current altitude, speed, flight path, and even aircraft registration and model — data that updates in real time with zero noticeable delay.
The free version offers more than enough functionality for most users: live flight tracking, basic flight details, airport status checks, and flight search by number or route. Optional paid subscriptions unlock advanced perks like historical flight data, 3D flight views, and no ads, but the free tier isn’t gimped or held back by aggressive paywalls — a huge plus for casual users. The only minor downsides are occasional sparse coverage in extremely remote regions, and short non-skippable ads in the free version (they’re unobtrusive and don’t break usage flow). This app is a must-have for frequent travelers, people picking up/dropping off passengers, aviation enthusiasts, and anyone who wants to track flight status without relying on clunky airline websites.
