Let me save you the headache I had figuring this out.

The first thing you gotta understand is team building. You don't need every 5-star character to win. In fact, sticking to a simple three-role setup will carry you through the early game no problem.

Tank: This is your damage sponge. You want someone who can take hits so your other two don't get wrecked. Thor (Marvel Now) or Hulk are solid picks when you're starting. Whatever you do, don't waste resources on 1-star Juggernaut—yeah he's a starter but his self-damage mechanic is more trouble than it's worth. Save your Iso-8 for 2-star characters instead.

Support: These guys keep your team alive or mess with the enemy's plans. Modern Storm is the best 1-star support bar none. Keep her even when you move to higher tiers. Pair her with Modern Black Widow and you can lock enemies out of turns—Widow steals their AP, Storm spends it on lightning. Rinse and repeat.

Fighter: Pure damage dealers. Modern Hawkeye's Blast Arrow can wipe whole teams if the board lines up right. Later on, Daken (Dark Avengers) is a beast because he heals himself, so he stays in the fight longer.
