Editor's Review
Machinarium isn’t just another point-and-clicker; it’s a hand-drawn masterpiece that proves you don’t need words to tell a gripping story. You step into the rusty shoes of Josef, a sweet little robot dumped on a scrap heap. The goal? Piece yourself back together, sneak into a city full of eccentric bots, and save your girlfriend from a gang. The puzzles are clever, mixing classic item-hunting with satisfying logic games, and Josef’s stretchy body adds a neat twist to exploration. The art is stunning—like a grimy, adorable robot fairy tale. If you’re a puzzle fan looking for a unique, atmospheric challenge, or a newbie wanting a smart intro to the genre, this one’s a gem.

Machinarium Tips
Machinarium First-Time Player's Guide: Don't Be a Scrap Heap
Look, I'll be straight with you—Machinarium is gorgeous, but it can also make you feel like a total idiot. I've been there, staring at the screen for twenty minutes trying to figure out why that pipe won't move. So after banging my head against this rusty world for a while, here's what I wish I knew starting out.
The Basics: You're a Stretchy Little Guy
You play as Josef, this adorable robot who gets dumped in a scrapyard. First thing you gotta do is put yourself back together—literally. The game doesn't hold your hand, but the mechanics are simple: click to move, click stuff to interact.
The big trick? Josef can stretch and shrink. Mouse over him until you see the up/down arrows, then drag. You'll need this constantly—reaching high shelves, squeezing into tight spots, all that jazz .
The Inventory System: Stuff Goes in Your Belly
Yeah, you read that right. Josef swallows items and keeps them in his tummy. Your inventory's at the top of the screen—just mouse up there to access it.
Pro tip: combine items by dragging one onto another. That magnet and wire you find early on? Yeah, you gotta put them together . The game's pretty good about removing items once you're done with them too, so your inventory doesn't get cluttered with useless junk .
When You're Stuck—And You Will Be Stuck
Machinarium doesn't mess around with difficulty. Even early puzzles had me scratching my head. But here's where the game's actually genius: the hint system.
Up in the top right corner, you'll see a light bulb. Click it, and Josef gets a thought bubble showing your current goal—just the "what," not the "how" .
Still stuck? Next to the bulb is a book. Click it and you gotta play this little side-scrolling shooter mini-game. Beat it, and you get a visual walkthrough for your CURRENT room only .
Look, I'm not proud of how many times I used this. But it beats alt-tabbing to YouTube and getting spoiled on later puzzles.
Stuff That Took Me Way Too Long to Figure Out
Talk to everyone. Even if they seem useless. That mouse-looking robot in the scrapyard? He's your ticket to getting your leg back .
Watch the cutscenes carefully. When you enter a new area, pay attention. The game shows you little memory sequences that often hint at what you need to do .
The clock puzzle. Later on, you'll need a code for a safe. Turn off the lights in the previous room first—the time shows up glowing on the clock . I won't spoil more, but yeah.
The band needs help. Those three musicians? They're part of a longer sequence. Give them screws (you'll find them), and eventually you get access to new areas .
Is It Worth It?
Yeah, absolutely. The hand-drawn art is stunning, the music sets this perfect mood, and there's something weirdly satisfying about finally cracking a puzzle you've been stuck on for an hour . Just don't expect to breeze through it. Take your time, explore every dirty alley, and use that hint system when you need to.
Perfect for: Puzzle lovers who appreciate atmosphere, anyone who loved old-school point-and-clicks, and people who don't mind a challenge.
