Voting and Karma:
Instead of likes and hearts, Reddit’s social network runs on upvotes or downvotes. Voting on posts and comments increase or decrease the creator’s karma, and helps popular and relevant posts rise to the top, while filtering out low-quality or irrelevant posts.
While karma doesn't directly impact your ability to use Reddit, more karma can increase posts’ visibility and help you get noticed. Some communities require karma to post or comment, which helps maintain content quality and community standards.
Reddit Tips
Core App Features You’ll Actually Use
This is the official Android home for Reddit, the world’s biggest user-driven social news and community forum. The whole app revolves around subreddits — topic-specific communities (like gaming, tech, cooking, or niche hobbies) run by regular users, not just the brand. You can upvote/downvote posts and comments to push good content to the top, scroll a personalized home feed, post text, images, videos or links, comment on discussions, and save posts for later. It has a clean, mobile-friendly layout, dark mode for late-night scrolling, and a Karma system (user reputation) that unlocks more posting permissions as you engage positively. The free version has non-intrusive ads, and you don’t need an account to browse, but signing up unlocks all features.
5 Quick Newbie Steps to Use Reddit Smoothly
You don’t need any prior experience to get this right — follow these 5 easy steps to avoid newbie mistakes and enjoy the app fully:
Browse first, make an account later (optional) — You can scroll most communities without signing up, just to test the waters. Make a free account only when you want to comment, post, or subscribe to your favorite subreddits.
Join relevant subreddits to customize your feed — Search for topics you love (gaming, fitness, tech, etc.) and hit “Join” to add them to your home feed. This replaces the generic trending page with content you actually care about.
Read subreddit rules BEFORE posting/commenting — Every community has strict rules (no spam, no self-promotion, stay on-topic) pinned at the top. Breaking them gets your posts removed or your account restricted, so don’t skip this step.
Stick to upvoting/commenting first, don’t spam posts — Build your Karma by leaving genuine comments and upvoting good content first. New accounts with low Karma can’t post in many communities, so take it slow.
Turn on dark mode and adjust notifications — Head to settings to enable dark mode (easier on eyes) and turn off annoying push notifications, so you only get alerts for things you care about.
